Active School Flag
The Active School Flag was launched by the Department of Education in May 2009. It is a non-competitive initiative which seeks to recognise schools that strive to achieve a physically active and physically educated school community.
Here in Dunboyne Junior School we succuessfully earned our Active school flag in June 2018. We have now started working towards our 2nd Active flag.
In order to be awarded the Active School Flag the whole school community worked very hard for the past 2 years. We have become more active as a school community and we look forward to keeping this up through various different initiatives throughout the year.
As the Active School Flag involves the whole school community we would encourage you to also provide opportunities for your children to be active at home. Free play is just as important as structured sports. Running around, playing in the garden or local park and having fun all count. Kids also love a challenge – setting them a task is a great way to get them active and keep them focused. For example, ask them: ‘How many times can you throw and catch a ball between you without dropping it?’ or ‘How many skips can you do in a minute?’
Additionally, if you think you have any skills or ideas that would be of benefit to the Active School Flag we would love you to get involved. You can pass on your suggestions to your child’s teacher. Your support of the Active School Flag is greatly appreciated.
Our Active School motto
Active, active every day

OFF DAYS (ON FOOT FRIDAYS)
OFF days (On Foot Fridays) will continue this week. Anyone who wishes to cycle/scoot to school may park their bikes behind rooms 1-3. As we hope to achieve our 4th green flag this term I am going to increase the OFF days and see how we get on! So from next week Junior Infants can bring their bikes/scooters to school on a Monday, Senior Infants on a Tuesday, 1st Classes on a Wednesday, 2nd classes on a Thursday and everyone on a Friday! The children's mode of transport will still only be recorded on a Friday however. It is definitely a great way of making the children more active! Our travel officer will be in the school next Tuesday and will be giving the children a talk on why the travel flag is so important. Hopefully this will spur the children on too!
Many thanks!
